Smart Tanning

Getting ready for summer? Thinking of heading for the beach? Grab your shades, your towel and your sandals, but don’t forget some sun block even if you are desperate for that golden glow.

According to scientific research, such a thing as a ‘healthy tan’ does not exist. Tanning is, in essence, the skin’s reaction to damage already done, and a defensive attempt to protect itself from further harm.

The UV (or Ultraviolet) rays are the most threatening component of a natural suntan. Two types of UV rays, UVA and UVB, negatively affect the skin by deeply penetrating our skin and potentially damage gene composition. UVA rays (the predominant type) tend to cause skin cancer after prolonged periods of time. Sunburn and the redness associated with sun exposure result from UVB rays, which are also a strong risk factor for skin cancer. Personal tanning methods available today attempt to eliminate the UV rays from coming in contact with the skin, yet you have to wonder how safe you are when shutting yourself in a tiny tanning booth for 30 minutes at a time!

Salon Options:
Popularity of tanning beds tends to soar as we all strive for the perfect hue and women of all ages aim to avoid the pasty white complexions they suffered long enough through the winter. Though they are thought to be only slightly more protective than getting a natural tan due to the controlled environment, risks are still associated with tanning beds as the exposure to UV rays is still present.

Did you know there is a recommended allotment of time that one should not exceed in the course of a year when using a tanning bed? According to the British Photodermatology Group (BPG-a branch of the British Association of Dermatologists), one should not surpass 10 sets of 30-minute sessions twice a year, or in other words, 10 hours of exposure per year. I am willing to bet most of us blow ten hours of sun exposure out of the water on each vacation we take!

Sunless Self-Tanning Options:
A safer method of tanning than natural tanning and visits to the salon, self-tanning products have taken leaps and bounds in technology - far beyond the ‘orange tone’ so many worry about experiencing.

Products:
Whether you are self-tanning or getting a natural tan, products come in several forms - lotions, sprays, and now, even a capsule that help you prepare for a great natural tan and help you slim down at the same time! Also, the use of a tan extender will help you keep your look for longer and help you to reduce your sun exposure.

January/February Tips

New Year, new you! - Cellulite

Cellulite occurs when the connective tissue pulls down on fat causing the fat to bulge under the skin. The less fat you have the less noticeable cellulite is. Diet and exercise play an important role in reducing the appearance of cellulite.

If you want to reduce cellulite you need to detox your body, especially your liver and colon. Lay off nicotine and caffeine, do not consume excess salt or fat and drink plenty of water. Eat foods rich in nutrients like soy, blueberries and nuts. Make sure you get the nutrients glucosamine, B vitamins and essential fatty acids. Onions are also a wonderful food to combat cellulite. Onions act as a natural diuretic releasing water buildup from skin cells.

Exercise to lose weight and tone your legs and buttocks. Do specific exercises to increase muscle mass in your thighs like walking, biking, stair climbing, yoga and pilates. The less fat and more muscle you have will make cellulite disappear. Muscle will stretch the skin and smooth out the dimpled bumpy appearance.

To increase circulation and break up the fat do daily massages to troubled areas. You can also use a body brush in the shower or bath with a body wash or exfoliating product to help increase circulation. Use aromatherapy oils in your bath to stimulate your system: Sage, cypress, and juniper oils aid with cellulite reduction.

Wearing pantyhose will also help combat and reduce cellulite, especially the body shaping ones that contour your thighs. Pantyhose compress fat and help aid circulation. There are cellulite reduction pantyhose on the market now specifically made to help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

You could also try Jean d'Estrees Stubborn Cellulite Control Booster Concentrate which has been recently featured in the Daily Mail, London Lite and Marie Claire, developed by savvy French beauty house, Jean d’Estrees. The formula is revolutionary. Biosculptine® is an ultra-innovative slimming ingredient which achieves great results. After one month’s use testers reported up to -2.2cm was lost from the thigh, and after two months up to -5.7cm from the waist.

Other great products are the SBC Body Firming Gel and SBC Detox Gel. They work particularly well when combined together as part of a slimming and toning programme.

December Tips and Hints

It’s December, and you are rushing around trying to be super-woman - buying cards, presents AND organising Christmas, (because we all know that men don’t). So, we have put together a great collection of products for you this month to help you get through day into night! Super hint….if you go for great eyes, tone down the lipstick, and vica versa to avoid looking ‘too much’.

From office to party

This is the month when you are flat out, so try these ideas.

  1. Wear a great pair of jeans or pants to the office and a simple knit for the day, add comfy shoes
  2. Apply a simple make-up taking care with your foundation (use a foundation brush for real perfection) and brush powder over lightly to ‘set’ the look. Then apply mascara and lip-gloss.
  3. Lunch-time, drink lots of hot water, eat something light and get those feet up for half an hour.
  4. If you can grab time to fit in a hairdressers appointment you can combine your lunch-time break with a stress free hour just for you!
  5. Now get ready to party……
  6. Change your knit for that fabulous top you have been longing to wear
  7. Choose a pair of show stopping ear-rings and bracelet
  8. Take a cotton wool pad that is ever so slightly damp and press over your face to re-vitalise skin
  9. Mix a little moisturiser with some foundation on the back of your hand and apply lightly with your foundation brush, or apply foundation from Clientele Perfect Coverage Compact Kit
  10. Vamp those eyes with eye-shadow, liner and mascara
  11. Use Palladio Herbal Lipstick to moisturise, or Palladio Plump n Shine to make the most of the mistletoe. We have the BEST colours this season in our lipstick ranges.
  12. Spritz your favourite perfume
  13. Finally, slip on a pair of killer heels, and go party!

Great Gifts for this month

Professional make-up brushes make a wonderful gift, and we have a great collection for you to look at in our accessories section.

Our Hand & Nail Therapy is something that you will want to buy for your friends, and for your-self!

The Chocolate Antioxidant Cream will take care of that skin after those late party nights

And for serious skin-care, look at our Estro Lift Golden Lotus Serum, or Night Duty Rotation Kits.

November Tips…It’s Party Time and all about EYES

Step one...Controlling those brows

Snipping instead of tweezing the brows might be all that is needed to control your brows. But do one hair at a time, and NEVER rush or try to do this before you rush out to work in the morning OR before that BIG date!

  • Brush brows straight up and then check for hairs that are too long.
  • Snip any offending hair one at a time with a small pair of scissors.
  • Brush brows downward and check again.
  • Repeat the previous step, snipping any hair that seems to be too long.
  • Brush brows into place and check for any hairs that still might need attention.
  • Continue brushing and snipping until your brows can be brushed into place naturally.

Palladio eye brow gel is ideal for holding your new beautiful brows in place. Clear in colour, it is ideal for all shades of brows.

Watch point: Maintaining your brows is something that should be done on a weekly basis or even daily basis instead of all in one day. Mistakes can be made that sometimes cannot be fixed, or you have to wait for them to grow again.
(yep…we have ALL over plucked and left bald bits). Also, for those of you who are not as confident with a pencil, we are launching Palladio Brow Powder in Dark Brown, Auburn and Taupe (£7.75) this month.

Brow Colour
Did you know that brows should be a little lighter than your hair colour? Yes, it's true...about two shades; however, if you are blond or gray, the opposite is true.

Filling In Your Eyebrows
The trick to full brows is to come clean, then fill in the blanks.

  • Choose a pencil and powder in the correct shade.
  • Brush brows downward with a dry, mascara-like wand. To define the arch, use the pencil to draw a line along the upper edge of the brow. Comb the brows upward and outward.
  • For added fullness, use brow powder on the hairs of the brow with a stiff, slanted brush. Dip the brush into a tiny amount of powder and use short, gentle strokes while applying.
  • If brows have been severely over tweezed, brush the hairs in the direction of the growth, and fill in any visible patches with powder. Avoid adding to the top or bottom of the brows.
  • Comb a clear brow gel up through the brows to set hairs in place.

Your eyebrows add strength and definition to your face. Well groomed eyebrows enhance your beauty.

You should pluck eyebrows before bedtime so any redness will disappear overnight. In shaping your eyebrows use your facial features. Use a pair of slant edge tweezers which grip hairs easily. Comb hairs one way and then the other to remove loose hairs. You should pluck hairs between the brows and any stragglers. Never remove the hairs from above your eyebrows. Pluck each hair individually close to the root. Work in the direction of the growth. Always avoid over plucking.

When using a pencil you should apply in small, feathered strokes. Starting at the inner corner work outwards.
Blend the colour with a brush. To tame stray hairs just use brow gel and comb through to neaten.

Thin Tip: Good for grasping small, fine hairs, and plucking ingrown hair.
Slanted Tip: Gives maximum control.
Square Tip: Best used for removing coarse hairs or several hairs at a time.

  1. Tweeze immediately after showering or apply a hot washcloth to loosen hair follicles.

  2. Hold a pencil vertically along the side of the nose. Eyebrow should start at outside edge of pencil. Hint: Leaving a bit more space will widen close-set eyes.

  3. Hold pencil to outside of eye. This is where the eyebrow should end.

  4. Smooth brows with a little moisturiser to help hairs slide out.
  5. Brush brows up to find a natural arch.

  6. Draw in the desired shape beforehand with a soft eye shadow pencil
Hint: Don't use an eyeliner pencil. It will cause you to pluck too much.
  7. Tweeze under the brow first, plucking in the direction of the growth.
Hint: If your plucking becomes too painful, apply a little anbesol (yes, that pain reliever for teeth also numbs the brows)
  8. Using an eyelash comb, comb brows upwards and trim any hairs that extend beyond the natural top or brow bone.
  9. After tweezing, soothe the area with cool, wet tea bags.

WHEW, all of that just to get great brows!

Defining those Eyes - Eye Makeup Tips and Tricks
Whatever your eye colour, blue, brown, hazel or green, eyes have been referred to as windows to the soul, giving those who exchange glances the power to see personality and emotions. Eyes reveal joy and elation as much as they uncover sadness, melancholy and distress. Sometimes pensive, mischievous or mysterious, eyes can let us in on little secrets we might otherwise miss in dealings with people we know and love.
Eyes can be sexy. A wink can signal a special understanding or remind another of an inside joke or amusing memory. Eyes also key into flirtation a great deal. Cartoons and old films always show the femme fatales batting their long, dark eyelashes in an attempt to attract a mate.
No matter what your motives, playing up the looks of your eyes makes for instant attraction, so be careful how you use them! The main makeup essentials for great eyes are mascara - eye shadow and eyeliner.

Eye Shadow
Mineral shadows are the latest way to use colour. Gentle on the skin, they don’t block pores and are light to use around the delicate eye area.

Mascara
When selecting mascara, choose from thickening to lengthening to blackest black or waterproof, each mascara product has a special offering of its own. Considering your own lashes, choose one that best suits your needs.
Generally, applying two coats of mascara will give enough definition to lashes to really make a difference. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second in an effort to prevent clumping. If some of the mascara accidentally brushes onto your eyelids or underneath, simply use a cotton bud to remove it.

Eyeliner
To really define your eyes, apply a thin line of eyeliner. To properly apply the eyeliner pencil or liquid liner, gently pull the corner of your eye outward, forming a straight line along your lashes. Starting at the inside corner and working toward the outside, delicately trace a line with the pencil angled toward your lashes.
Be careful how much eyeliner you apply, as a little really does go a long way. For a dramatic look, thicker and darker is very acceptable. For a subtle definition, stick with a lighter application.

Now for some sexy eyes!
Apply your foundation and powder.
Using your eyeliner pencil, start from the front corner of your eyelid. Draw a soft smudge line to the end of your lash line.
Use your eye shadow brush to apply the dark eye shadow over the top of the smudged line for a soft smoky look. Ensure that the edges are neatly blended.
Then take the brush eyeliner and apply as close to your lashes as you can on the top lid only. Make the line as thick and pronounced as you wish, but make sure that the line is thickest at the outer corner, and thinner as you go inward.
Apply another smoky coat of eye shadow with the brush to blend the harsh edges.
Subtly blend your darker eye shadow up from your lashes to your eye crease. Then apply a shimmery highlight under the outside corner of your eyebrow.
Use your eyebrow pencil to make your eyebrow curve more pronounced.
Apply thin coats of mascara, building the layers up gradually to avoid clumping.

Younger looking eyes...
The first step is to reduce fine lines.
So always remove eye make-up before going to sleep, and to keep those eyes Younger looking…
Apply a little eye cream on the brow bone and under the eye using the ‘ring finger’, as it exerts the least pressure!

October Skin Hints

So you have over-done the sun, and so this is the perfect time to pamper your skin, and get it ready for winter. So before we talk product here are some great tips for skin!

Feeling brave?

Start the day with a hot shower... but before you get out switch to cold water for about fifteen seconds. Then turn up the heat a little, and down again to repeat the process for about two minutes. This is a simple hydrotherapy technique which revitalizes the skin by stimulating the flow of blood through the body. It is invigorating and highly beneficial to the skin. So even though you may not really enjoy the process, just think of the all the good it’s doing you!

Use a good moisturiser.

Choose a highly protective day cream which contains an SPF to protect from the daily pollutants that we all encounter, including protection from the sun. Exfoliate at least twice a week. This will remove dead cells and allow the skin to absorb extra moisture. The oil which we all complain about in the Summer is no longer being produced because of cooler winter temperatures and central heating. Therefore the skin looses the water which should be retained in the lower dermis of the skin. This can lead to premature aging of the skin and fine lines, whilst your skin can appear puffy and grey.

Drink a glass of hot water with lemon.

This Chinese herbal remedy is a sure-fire method of energizing your body. It will de-tox your entire system, including the liver and gall bladder. This means that your body will be able to clean the blood faster to get rid of toxins responsible for bad skin.

Simply sleep!

Money can’t buy the benefits of a good nights rest. Your oxygen levels will drop if you don’t get enough sleep, meaning that your cells will not be renewed as quickly. This is when degenerative skin aging sets in.

Great skin-care products to try this month:

We sold out too quickly in September of Clientele Elastology Firming Trio Kit, so have air-shipped extra for October, at the same great offer of £35.00!

Pumpkin Regeneration Duo Kit, a fantastic way to kick start your new skin care routine. Pumpkin peptide Regeneration Cream contains peptide, antioxidants and natural pumpkin enzymes.

Lotus peptide mineral infusion for skin vitality, contains 70 trace elements.

Anti aging activator plus is a space age formula with over 23 antioxidants Look after your skin, great skin really is your best asset!

September Tips

Autumn/winter 08 fashion colours combine rich wines and berries, highlighted by Fuchsia Pink.

Daytime, keep eyes neutral allowing lips to be beautiful and bright with fashion- focused colour.

Perfect all day make-up

Always start with clean skin, lightly moisturised. Add foundation sparingly, dusting lightly with powder for a matte finish. Keep blusher and eye make-up neutral, adding drama with the new seasons lip colours.

Want your eye shadow to last for hours? Here’s a quick trick to try: apply your foundation over the whole of the lid as a base, and then follow it up with your favorite shadow. This layering technique enables your eye shadow look to last much longer than applying powder shadow alone. And, as an added bonus, this technique intensifies the colour. Give it a try next time you have an all day or evening event!

Night-time, work those eyes with penciled highlights and lashings of mascara for full vamped lashes.
